Good Weekend
media_junkie and J arrived on Friday night in time for us
to hit the nice sushi restaurant in a town that shouldn't be upscale
enough to have it ;-) Seriously good food. My tekka don had lots of
lovely extras beyond the yummy tuna.
Then we hit the local movie house to see
Prince Caspian. It
wasn't the most memorable of the Narnia books and just to prove it, J
and I were trying to guess at where some changes may have been made
from the original -- it's just as possible that it's a verbatim
rendition of the original, we just weren't sure. What I can say is
that it's a good movie, in keeping with the series. Definitely action
based with better overall pacing than the first movie. While battle
action is always my thing, this had a nice mixture of battle and
character interaction with one exceptional scene that I won't spoil
you for :-)
Saturday we took our time but left early enough to get into the city
for a nice lunch at a restaurant on 8th ave, near Times Square. It
was a "pub" called the Playwrite. I had the sheppards pie, which was
a tad too salty and small, but yummy all the same. J's stuffed chicken
breast and MJ's salmon both looked seriously good and the ladies liked
them.
Then we were off to the main event,
Young Frankenstein on
Broadway. I've got mixed feelings about the show. The iconic parts
of the movie seemed to be tossed in. However, in moving it to stage,
they were able to jazz up other parts of the movie. Turning
Putting on the Ritz into a full production number was a
brilliant use of the media. Likewise, letting Megan Mullally belt it
out diva style as the rich and frigid fiance was a real treat. Frau
Blucher (neigggggghhhhhhh) and Igor were great in their character
rolls, in that way that the secondary cast on Broadway is allowed to
shine in ways that they just aren't in movies.
The stage craft was elaborate with significantly more set changes and
mechanization than I've seen in a show for a while. But in many ways,
I think that the expensive set was a way of trying to buy off the
audiance and make them look past a play that was better than okay, but
not spectacular. This is in sharp contrast to say the Lion King where
the stage craft and costumes raised the story to another level.
Still, I enjoyed myself mightily and had a great afternoon.
We headed back to Jersey and hit the PF Changs near the Weehawkin
ferry port where we met up with Steve. Seriously good meal from the
fun drinks through the appetizers and main course right to the
mini-desserts. The desserts were served in shot glasses, so big
enough to be that bite of sweet you want, without being an overpriced
piece of cake you'll never finish. If you make it there, I definitely
recommed the key lime martini - yummmm.
And then we made our way back to the western wilderness and proceded
to crash. We slept later on Sunday morning. Since MJ and J weren't
up for a breakfast adventure, I just stayed in my PJs most of the day.
The ladies made it home safely before dark.
I spent my afternoon catching up on Doctor Who, BSG, Bones, House and JAG.
*I'm enjoying Dr. Who and the new companion.
*I'm a combination of huh?, wtf! and omg! over BSG -- I will need to
watch this season over again once all is said and done. I don't even
have a guess about the final Cylon, but I can't wait for it.
*Last week's Bones was *MUCH* better when it was an NCIS episodes.
Still enjoyable, but knowing that it could have been done much better,
left me feeling wanting; we'll see what they can do in the finale
tonight.
*And in JAG I'm in the second season. Replacing too smiley and
complacent Meg with Mac was a great move. The Bellesario House does a
significantly better job writing Marines. Also, S2 JAG credits may be
*more* pretentious and overbearing than the credits from the later
seasons of Andromeda - and boy, that says a lot. Still, I'm a glutan
for this kind of thing - I want to see all of JAG leading into NCIS,
well, and beyond. I like when the JAG lawyers guest star on NCIS and
I want to get to know them better.
And that was my weekend.
