    Yippee!
    Good times!

    The rich splurge on bargains
As rates fall, time is right for deals

For the class of rich who make more than $1 million a year and have several times that in the bank, the time is right for indulgence. Falling interest rates have made luxury goods cheaper to buy, and the items, which tend to be considered investments because they retain their value, are proving attractive alternatives to the volatile stock market. There is also the foreclosure factor: A growing number of high-end boats, cars, and homes have been foreclosed upon by banks and can be had for cut-rate prices.

    Woo hoo!
Proof that irresponsibility and calamity only hurt if your not rich!
    Cool huh?

    Good Weekend
[info]media_junkie and J arrived on Friday night in time for us
to hit the nice sushi restaurant in a town that shouldn't be upscale
enough to have it ;-) Seriously good food. My tekka don had lots of
lovely extras beyond the yummy tuna.

Then we hit the local movie house to see Prince Caspian. It
wasn't the most memorable of the Narnia books and just to prove it, J
and I were trying to guess at where some changes may have been made
from the original -- it's just as possible that it's a verbatim
rendition of the original, we just weren't sure. What I can say is
that it's a good movie, in keeping with the series. Definitely action
based with better overall pacing than the first movie. While battle
action is always my thing, this had a nice mixture of battle and
character interaction with one exceptional scene that I won't spoil
    you for :-)

Saturday we took our time but left early enough to get into the city
for a nice lunch at a restaurant on 8th ave, near Times Square. It
was a "pub" called the Playwrite. I had the sheppards pie, which was
a tad too salty and small, but yummy all the same. J's stuffed chicken
breast and MJ's salmon both looked seriously good and the ladies liked
    them.

Then we were off to the main event, Young Frankenstein on
Broadway. I've got mixed feelings about the show. The iconic parts
of the movie seemed to be tossed in. However, in moving it to stage,
they were able to jazz up other parts of the movie. Turning
Putting on the Ritz into a full production number was a
brilliant use of the media. Likewise, letting Megan Mullally belt it
out diva style as the rich and frigid fiance was a real treat. Frau
Blucher (neigggggghhhhhhh) and Igor were great in their character
rolls, in that way that the secondary cast on Broadway is allowed to
shine in ways that they just aren't in movies.

The stage craft was elaborate with significantly more set changes and
mechanization than I've seen in a show for a while. But in many ways,
I think that the expensive set was a way of trying to buy off the
audiance and make them look past a play that was better than okay, but
not spectacular. This is in sharp contrast to say the Lion King where
the stage craft and costumes raised the story to another level.
Still, I enjoyed myself mightily and had a great afternoon.

We headed back to Jersey and hit the PF Changs near the Weehawkin
ferry port where we met up with Steve. Seriously good meal from the
fun drinks through the appetizers and main course right to the
mini-desserts. The desserts were served in shot glasses, so big
enough to be that bite of sweet you want, without being an overpriced
piece of cake you'll never finish. If you make it there, I definitely
recommed the key lime martini - yummmm.

And then we made our way back to the western wilderness and proceded
to crash. We slept later on Sunday morning. Since MJ and J weren't
up for a breakfast adventure, I just stayed in my PJs most of the day.
The ladies made it home safely before dark.

I spent my afternoon catching up on Doctor Who, BSG, Bones, House and JAG.

*I'm enjoying Dr. Who and the new companion.
*I'm a combination of huh?, wtf! and omg! over BSG -- I will need to
watch this season over again once all is said and done. I don't even
have a guess about the final Cylon, but I can't wait for it.
*Last week's Bones was *MUCH* better when it was an NCIS episodes.
Still enjoyable, but knowing that it could have been done much better,
left me feeling wanting; we'll see what they can do in the finale
    tonight.
*And in JAG I'm in the second season. Replacing too smiley and
complacent Meg with Mac was a great move. The Bellesario House does a
significantly better job writing Marines. Also, S2 JAG credits may be
*more* pretentious and overbearing than the credits from the later
seasons of Andromeda - and boy, that says a lot. Still, I'm a glutan
for this kind of thing - I want to see all of JAG leading into NCIS,
well, and beyond. I like when the JAG lawyers guest star on NCIS and
I want to get to know them better.

    And that was my weekend.

    Whoa.

So, on Friday I went out for karaoke.  It was in a strip mall, and I noticed that the bar was nestled between Mike's Warehouse and Young's Groceries.  Obviously the place for me.

I was pointing it out to the people there when one of them piped up, "good thing your middle name isn't Keith."  Well, as it turns out my middle name is Keith and there to the side was Keith's Driving School.

    Weird.

Character Count: 11, but I'm going to do an Information Sheet next.

As Heckle and Jeckle always say:
"It's a good life if you know how to live!"

Woke up, got dressed, worked for an hour or so. Drove down to Ringler's Pub, on the ground floor beneath Annaliese's stomping grounds at the Crystal Ballroom. Ordered lunch, visited with the fine people of Oregon Literacy, paid my entry fee for the Benefit Tournament, met up with my partner and got down to some Scrabble.
REALLY COOL DETAILS HERE FOR WORD GEEKS )

Then I came home, did an hour's work, took a phone meeting with the Smithsonian Folkways chap and headed to John Wenderoth's for fresh-made paella from shellfish they'd hauled up from the sea-floor today. Then I talked to Annaliese for an hour from DC. As I was taking Lego home, I found out that my short lesbian neighbors were waiting for their tall housemate so they could restore their interior lighting. I dropped the doggie and came back to help install the light the Tom and Lois has so kindly bequeathed them. It always feels so fine to replace a Shakey's Pizza stained-glass abomination with something more suitable to the little bungalow in question. :)

Then back to John's where key limes led to a conversation between Rude, Lori and I about Pie ~ and the stark realization that on a Sunday night pie was not available here in the fifth quadrant (not even for ready money). A few moments later, Kelly and Aron brought apple pie and Whipped Cream. It has been suggested by all involved that a "Pie- Night" would be a kick-ass gathering. Heaven knows our kitchen has room...

We later tried Toblerone with the whipped cream and wished we had an eyedropper for Kaluha into the bargain. Mmm... The chocolate in question made me think so strongly of the delightful Phil Jupitus:

I had moderate fun. The one panel I wanted absolutely to attend - well, a workshop actually, on inking - was cancelled due to the leaders (Ibrium? studios) not showing up. Some sister con-goer got up and was all "well if it's not gonna start, lets tell each other what our favourite anime is" ugh. no. I wanted to learn about inking, kthxbai. So I got to go back to the dealers room, buy the boxset of Mirage of Blaze for 20 bucks and a shiny button and NOT an air gun for 15$ nor a wooden sword for 6$ nor a real sword for 35$ nor a set of kunai for 10$. I got strange looks when, after slobbering all over the cases I told the dealers that, no I was not allowed to buy weapons. Sadly enough? The thought that came to me when i considered the air gun (totally for home security, yo) was "no, that just raises the bar". Meaning that if I have a gun on someone, that totally justifies their shooting me. Prolly cause that's the only reason I would actually use one - in the presence of an absolute threat. And to me, someone holding a gun on me/mine is an absolute threat. Cause, dude? Guns are six ways from stupid and cannot be held accountable for what they do.

Yeah. I am rambling. Post-con let down or waaaaaay to much ice cream? The world may never know.

This year I almost bought neko ears. *shudder* And I sat beside that annoying girl with the ackack laugh who OUTTA THE BLUE turns and talks to you as if you're her best friend and have known her all her life ("It's giving me a headache," she says without provocation. I'm at masquerade, waiting for the next skit to take the stage. I ignore her. I don't know her and haven't said anything but, no the seat is free, and it's been ten years since I did the time warp - that just to explain why I bumped her. She's undaunted by my silence and ignores my simple attempt at a social clue of not-turning-towards-her. "It's the white light. You know, that flashes over the audience?" She laughs slightly and I suddenly have a dreadful feeling that she's gonna rest her head on my shoulder. Maybe she senses I have aspirin in my bag? Oh god; does she remember that she stood beside me at the dealer booth earlier this weekend? god knows SHE is memorable enough in my mind. That laugh. That back-of-the-head chalkboard-scratchy voice that I'd SWEAR was affected, but she maintained it all the while she spoke to the dealer about yinyang and her favourite rings and bathrooms and ackack ackack. "AckAck! I know her! AckAck!" She throws her arm in front of my face and points to the pictures they're showing on the screens: scenes of the con and various cosplayers flash on and off to entertain while we wait. "Hey. I don't remember seeing that!" What is the sound of one fangirl choking? ack ack.)

Don't get me wrong, I like fans and all, but this con-year I felt so freaking old! [info]sarabi HURRY UP AND GRADU-freaking-ATE so I can hang out with people who make me crazy in a good way and with whom *I* can annoy others and speak my witty remarks about peanut butter without the other party going "wouldn't that hurt?"

And yes, dear fanboy. It would. For a little bit.

    Looking forward
I shall be visiting another planet this week-end. (Not today, this coming week-end.) I shall be meeting creatures from other cultures, witnessing strange and bizarre performances, and talking with people (aliens?) about politics, technology, and ideas.

I'm talking about the Baltimore science fiction convention which runs next week-end. Balticon is a gathering of science fiction geeks, a set of presentations, and a bunch of 'extra' sessions like concerts and ballroom dancing. The normal presentations cover topics on science fiction writing (developing plots and characters, finding publishers, etc.) and also on science (astronomy and NASA's programs).

The convention is way for me to 'get away' from the normal routine and become exposed to new ideas. Getting away is a necessary thing for me. I can't live with the same ideas, day in and day out. I need new ideas, new things to think about.

Still trying to figure out my schedule for July. Right now my boss will not sign up for the business trip. If he does not sign for it, I will probably catch a flight west sooner then the party. I am thinking of spending some time near the Grand Canyon or Los Vegas. Not sure yet. I hope to find out before 1 June. I'll have to buy plane tickets then anyway.

Have to note that last week playing golf while I had an overall better than average game (broke 100) I had one shot that amazed us all. I drove the ball 336 yards. My normal kind of drive is in the 230 yard range, a great one is about 280. Yes the wind was behind me but it was not that huge. I still screwed up the hole with 2 lousy chip shots and 3 putts.

Mosaic memory and New York City: a sort-of restaurant review
I've always felt at home in New York City.

Some of that's from being born here (I'm in the city as I write this), which entitles one forever after to always answer that question of "Where are you from?" with "New York." (The "city" is implied. Otherwise you would have said "upstate." Conversely, one can also answer with just "The City" and anyone in the Northeast or MidAtlantic states will know which city you mean. When I got to college in Rhode Island it was one of the phrases translated for people from other areas of the country in the orientation handbook.)

Of course that question, "Where are you from?" was one I heard a lot as a kid, prompted not by curiosity about my birthplace but as a code for "where are your genes from?" Looking at me, people couldn't decide what I was. Italian? American Indian? Puerto Rican?

Of course, the correct answer to the person who asks "Where are you from?" but who is staring at you in such a way that you know they mean "what ethnicity are you?" is: "New York."

    Bullet points...
    * Prince Caspian ROCKS! Dawn Tr[e]ader comes out in 2010. Too damn long away, by half! But at least they have the Silver Chair listed for 2011. (Though I thought that was reversed. Am I wrong?) And should I be afraid it's being directed by the guy who did the 7-14-21-28-35-42 Up movies? (ETA: I know the word is Treader. Sleep dep is an ugly thing...)

    * The list of movies being remade in the next several years is appalling. I can't begin to describe. Be afraid.

    * The next week is going to be hell.

    * I still need someone to come with me for Prairie Home Companion next Saturday. They're awesome seats (Orchestra, six rows from the stage. C'mon! You know you want to... (I'm sorry you're not local, G, 'cause I'd take you with me if I could, but you're right: 1,700 miles is a very long way to commute!)

    * [info]therevdrnye, thanks for seeing the movie with me this afternoon!

    * Who wants to see Raiders the week after next? There is NO WAY I'm going to wedge that in next weekend. I'm open for locations - only really bad day is the 27th.

    Housing

Still working on it.  I'm pretty settled on a one bedroom apt, though it can be a seperate entrance basement apt instead of an apt complex.  No house shares or subletting, though.

    Schedule

Still ugly - this and next weekend are full of events and B is off doing Revels stuff.  The girls and I worked the pirate rest stop at the DC MS bike ride today and dumped a lot of energy there.  Tomorrow is UU, markbark's open house and salmon eating festival, and then get the girls to bed for school.  Memorial Day weekend is looking ugly as well.

I hate politics. The orphan works legislation is really unfair. My professional organization has a full time lawyer who has been working with the committees etc. drafting these bills for house and senate. He took a lot of heat when he suggested that we are doomed to some kind of orpahan works legislation and that he thought the senate bill version of a few weeks a go was as good as it was going to get, whereas the house had no protections for creators. Well, the senate has approved changes in its bill and they all suck. The latest info is bel;ow - go kick some ass! Normally I can’t quote ASMP as they include a no sharing clause in emails. Not this one baby - too important to all creatives.

Re: S.2913, the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008

    Dear Member:

On May 14, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved some revisions to its version
of an Orphan Works amendment. You can see the full text of the bill, as revised,
    at
    http://www.asmp.org/news/spec2008/COE08543_xml.pdf
In spite of ASMP’s efforts, the bill does not provide even the minimum
protections that ASMP considers necessary for photographers, and it is now time
for the members to make their voices heard in the Senate.

**We urge you to write to your Senators** as soon as possible. You can find the
name and contact information for your two Senators at
    http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/
After you have selected your state, your Senators will be the first two names in
    the list.

You can find a letter that you can copy and paste, print on your letterhead and
    fax to your Senators, at
    http://www.asmp.org/news/spec2008/model_letter_S2913.php
Please feel free to change the wording as you wish.

It will take you only a few minutes to create and send these letters, but they will be some of the best used
    minutes of your career.

Thank you for your support in this important matter.
